IMail Server FAQs

Following is a listing of the frequently asked questions about the new IMail Server platform. If you still have questions about IMail, please feel welcome to contact us.

  1. Does your IM system plug into Yahoo, AOL, etc.? Does your IM system plug into Yahoo, AOL, etc.?
No, and that's by design. Our IM system transmits securely and logs all activity, and it would not be able to do that if it interoperated with other IM systems. Even though smaller businesses have important relationships with suppliers and vendors, more than ¾ of messages are sent within the company. If secure instant messaging is a requirement for working with outside vendors, you can add them to your Instant Messaging user base.

  2. How do I manage the mail/collaboration system? How do I manage the mail/collaboration system?
All the administration and maintenance can be done from any web browser using our consolidated administrator utility. Since email is so critical, we also recommend that you deploy network monitoring to keep track of the health of the mail system and the server on which it resides.

  12. I already have Anti-Virus on every desktop in the company, why should I pay for AV on the mail server? I already have Anti-Virus on every desktop in the company, why should I pay for AV on the mail server?
Virus protection on the server is not a substitute for protection on the desktop; it's a supplement and an additional layer of safety. You can't always be sure that end-users keep their desktops up to date, and you can't be sure that they won't access email from machines other than their regular desktops. Although lots of malicious code comes in by email, there are many other ways in. Therefore we believe that having AV at the mail server level and the desktop level is the best plan for total protection. (Note that AV is not included in IMail Server products; it must be purchase separately.)

User or mailbox is an account within IMail. The number of mailboxes you'll need is based on the number of users you'll have using the system. In IMail, a "user" is an actual email account that is capable of receiving email messages. Aliases are not considered users. Aliases only act as forwarders to real email accounts and are not counted towards the license. (Also, "Root" is NOT counted as a user.)

In Ipswitch Instant Messaging, a user is an ID that is capable of logging on to the server to send IM messages. Even though all your users may not be active at once, if the ID exists in your users database, then the ID is counted as a user.

In Workgroup Share, a user is an account that you create in WGS Manager that is capable of sharing or viewing other user's information.
